HOUSTON-The Texas Southern athletics department participated in a community service project this past week at Wheeler Christian Academy. While there they read to the students, participated in hula dancing, hula contest, family competition, and musical chairs.

TSU baseball, women’s basketball, and volleyball athletes all participated in the event meant to bring families together to help encourage their kids to do well in school and the importance of learning. For Texas Southern senior shortstop Ray Hernandez it was an opportunity to give back that he could not pass up.

“We always enjoy the opportunity to give back to the local community,” said TSU senior shortstop Ray Hernandez. “I’ve worked hard over the years to try to make a positive impact in the lives of our area youth. It’s a very humbling experience anytime you’re viewed as a role model and my goal everyday is to live up to those expectations both on and off the field.”

The Baylor Bears defeated the fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the championship game with a score of 80-61

Baylor’s Brittney Griner led the way with 26 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Last year’s MVP Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame was the top performer on her squad with 20 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.

Baylor’s win over Notre Dame in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, became the first basketball team, men or women, to finish the season 40-0.

Even though the true purpose of attending a sporting event is, in fact, to watch the sport itself, it never hurts to look fashionable while doing it.

Here, Angela Simmons, LaLa Anthony (wife of Carmelo Anthony) and Kim Kardashian show their personal and fun style while being court side at a Knicks game. Some may think Simmons’s dress as over the top, I see it as daring. Some may think Kardashians fur is a bit too much, I see it as fierce. Anthony makes a perfect medium in black skinny jeans, a bright pink blouse (perfect for spring) and fabulous leopard heels.

Court side style verdict: three snaps and a hair flip!

I had the opportunity of interviewing former Texas Southern University football stand-out Dejuan Fulghum before his professional career. Fulghum was a former Detroit Lion and currently plays for the Sioux Falls Storm. Although Fulghum did the interview for SoSuDiddy.com I felt it was still fitting to put the interview on Sports N Heels. Enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »
